Water Baby

After dance rehearsal on Tuesday I decided to go for a swim. Brendon's apt. complex has this gorgeous lap pool that never gets used. So I went against my new rule of not spending money and bought goggles and a two piece practice suit...but all at Target and all with tip money from Belly Dancing last weekend.  I had just danced for 2 hours and I was all warmed up so I donned the suit and headed out.  I braced myself for a cold rush when I jumped in but it never came...gotta love Southern California! a heated pool and nice weather. I set my clock for 25 minutes and guess what...I swam the whole 25 minutes. Now I know that's not a great big deal (especially to you athletes...Stronger, Chris, Greenfish) but I haven't swam a lap since I quit swim team at 16.  That was 7 years ago! It felt great too...cutting through the water and my muscles on Wednesday were pleasantly used feeling...not crazy sore, just happy.  I love swimming, I'm lucky Brendon has a pool and told me to use it whenever.  The unique thing about swimming is (most people) can't listen to music or read or do anything else but swim.  I live my life to a soundtrack.  I play music when I shower, eat, read, walk, drive...it drives me crazy to have silence most of the time. But swimming you can't listen to music, you make your own. I remember when I tought swimming lessons, we used to teach the young kids to sing songs to blow bubbles.  And when I was on swim team I would sing to keep my tempo up and to keep a steady breathing rate. Tuesday I let myself think.  Finally, alone with my brain, forced to relax.  It was great. And I love to feel the weight of the water sliding over my back. I like to flip turn and push off way too low, close to the bottom of the pool so I can feel the heavyness of the water above me rush past, pull my hair back.

All this because I finally decided to train for...a triathalon!  I am NOT an athlete...I've never run more than a mile. But I picked one in June close by and it is for women of all fitness levels, the Danskin triathalon. I'm sure it's one of the sissy races...3 mile run, .5mile swim, 12 mile bike I think. I have a bike, Brendon gave it to me for my birthday, and now I have a pool to swim in. and a goal.  I looked at my body in my swim suit and I thought, are those my legs? is that my cellulite? I'm not complaining, I have good stock in my family, very muscular breed we are. But at 23...I want to be more fit. I want to know I can do whatever I want to do, be it triathalon or whatever...

anyone want to join me?

sad to say but i don't think cellulite really has anything to do with fitness. you've got it or you don't. i've seen some awesome bodies during fittings that still have cellulite.

I'm really impressed. You sound like a physically active person. I don't have any endurance or stamina at all. Good luck with the training! That ought be exciting.

That is awesome! I disagree with the cellulite comment. You'll see it melt away. Good for you!

Great news, Crista - and good luck with the training. If you have any pointers, let me know. I'd do the Danskin too, but they don't allow boys... :)

Awesome

Thanks for calling me an athlete- I would never think of myself as one, and as I am trying to make it to 4 miles tonight I am going to think about that.
The Danksin tri will be my first too in July.
