Migraine

I shouldn't be awake right now. I have two auditions tomorrow and, granted, the first one isn't until 10am, but preparation takes a while. However, I have a splitting headache...splitting. I really do feel as if everything would be fine if I could just pop my head off my body and set it aside for a while.

Brendon and I watched Rodgers & Hammerstein's "South Pacific" tonight. We both fell asleep though. I don't really like that musical, but I do enjoy elements of if. I have listed them below:

1. There is progressive artistic lighting for the time in which the movie was made. Different color washes to depict the mood of different scenes. That was interesting.

2. I like some of the musical numbers. "There is Nothing Like a Dame" is just funny and enjoyable. I also like the famous "Hunny Bun", my sister and I used to do our own renditions of this musical number when we were young. My sister liked to roll her stomach like Billis (for those of you who know the movie).

3. I like the scenery. I don't know where it was filmed, probably Hawaii, but it is beautiful!

What I don't like"

1. The cheesy, cliche script.

2. The sappy female lead (played by a simpering Mitzi Gaynor, I blame the director not the actress).

3. The musical numbers "Happy Talk", "I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy" ( I had to sing that song in voice class in college. When a song starts out "I'm as corny as Kansas in August..." you know you're in trouble!), and "Cockeyed Optimist". Blech!

Okay that's three and three, I'll stop there. My headache is feeling better too.

As a dancer/performer, I feel it is my duty to enjoy musicals. I haven't had that much exposure to them really, besides the MGM musicals. We never went to see shows when I was growing up. But as an adult, I have tried to catch up a bit. I have noticed that I like more modern musicals better than the traditional musicals. I have never been a fan of cheese or cliche which I feel is the basis of many standard musicals. To illustrate my opinion I made a short list of examples....

Musicals I don't really enjoy:

1. Camelot
2. My Fair Lady
3. Grease
4. Carousel
5. Oklahoma (though there are reedeming aspects)
6. Chorus Line (dancers hate me for this)

Musicals I do enjoy:

1. Children of Eden
2. Miss Saigon
3. Side Show
4. Les Mis
5. On The Town
6. The Producers
7. Chicago
8. Cabaret
9. Contact

to be honest, a few of these I haven't even seen but I like the music and story line

Musicals I can tolerate and enjoy aspects of:

1. Oklahoma
2. Damn Yankees (though Gwen Verdon rubs me the wrong way)
3. Annie Get Your Gun
4. Pippin
5. Song and Dance
4. Hair

really, I can appreciate aspects of all musicals, of course. and there is a huge list of musicals I know nothing or very little of. And some I feel I really should know about because they are culturally relevant now, especially for a dancer, like:

1. Rent
2 Aida
3. Little Shop of Horrors
4. Avenue Q
5. Beauty and the Beast
6. Jeckyll and Hyde
7. Movin' Out
8. Evita (my audition song for tomorrow is from Evita, and the audition is for Aida...funny right?)

so yeah that's that. My headache is subsiding so I am going to sleep now. Ciao!

South Pacific was actually filmed in French Polynesia. I've a co-worker whose brother was in the navy & startioned there at the time. The extras in many of the scenes were real navy guys. She said they had a blast. My favorite song is "You Have to Be Taught". It speaks volumes of truth regarding bigotry in our society. Then & now.

BTW: you don't need to know anything about Avenue Q other than it's N-17 with puppets.
