Issue of the Hour

I like getting peoples advice so here is my trivial dilemma today.

I was offered a job on Friday. To teach Ballroom at Arthur Murray...full-time. They'd train me and I'd teach and make money. The first week I would prolly make the minimum $270.00. After I had students though I would make the base rate $270 or my hourly whichever was higher. The lowest level is $13/40 minute lesson...each level is another dollar...I would never make less than 270. I would have to quit my day job. I would teach 1pm -10pm mon-fri.

Pros:

no desk job
learn ballroom
get to perform w/ students in competitions across the country
sleep in/work out..ect in the mornings
weekends free

Cons:

SEVERLY limits performing gigs to Sat/Sundays only
don't see Brendon until after 10...that's kind of usual anyway though but still
pay cut for a while
if I want to quit to take a performing job I can't b/c I don't have another breadwinning job

does anyone have advice? I have until March 6 until training from 2-5pm starts and then start teaching around M.20th

I once tried out for a job at an Arthur Murray Dance studio and was offered a position, but in the end I declined the offer.

Your decision really will depend on what's most important to you. For me, having the time and energy to focus on my belly dancing was very important to me, and I thought that the Arthur Murray job wouldn't have allowed that.

During the one-week try-out/training period, I also realized I had to be on my feet, in heels, for several hours each day. With my feet/leg issues, I knew I couldn't do it. I was physical worn-out at the end of each day and didn't feel like doing much of anything once I got home. I also thought that I wouldn't have much of a social life if I had to spend most of weekday evenings at work.

Furthermore, I thought that the pay was much too low compared to what I knew I could make as an independent ballroom instructor and what the studio was making off their students. For the amount of work I'd do - teaching, dancing with the students, training, competing etc. - I felt I wouldn't be adequately compensated.

If performing gigs on weeknights is very important to you, I'd seriously consider not taking the job and finding else something for the daytime hours.

Of course, for someone who's never danced ballroom before, the offer is tempting indeed. You get to learn ballroom - though they often teach you just enough so that you're only one or two lessons ahead of your students - and you are given the opportunity to compete at your students' expenses in pro/am competitions.

If you're really interested in this position but are afraid of quitting because you don't have another job, you might want to consider having have another job during the day. You'll be working a lot and will likely be tired, though, so that's something to consider. Once again, it's up to you to decide what your major priorities are.

Sorry this is so long. Hope this helps or at least gives you an idea of what working at Arthur Murray might be like! :)
