A Night in the Tropics...
Well, the audition was a rare experience. It ended up being in an office in Newport Beach, no accompianist so I sang accapela and then two songs that are not really in my range but she commented on how good my belt was...so good, she could see through the crap that is my soprano. Then I showed her a belly dancing combo, freestyle jazz to her music and nearly fainted when she asked me to freestyle hip hop. But whatever. She showed me some polynesian dancing techniques to practice. Long story short, she books her dancers in the following categories - polynesian dancing, hiphop/jazz, voice/emcee, and she was delighted that she could put me in all the categories. woot. and she needs a dance captain and said it works for everyone b/c they get paid more. soooo long story short I have a callback with the company on Friday evening, which is actually just jumping into a rehearsal and I am to begin learning to sing "blue hawaii" and "sophisticated hula". They have a May 19th gig where she would like me to sing those two songs and emcee and then freestyle. It's mostly club dancing, promo stuff, parties, parades...ect.
Long story short, I'd still rather get Aida...however it's Wednesday and they haven't called. So it's not likely they are going to. And I'm not positive I want to jump into another small, ethnic dancing company as I have quit two already this year. But if Prodance was a step under Layla, this company is several steps above Layla. They work with a magazine (Thirteen Minutes) and seem to have steady work and a structure AND I was already emailed music to learn. They have a media kit (more than I can say for anywhere else I have worked), photographers who are going to be taking my picture on Friday so she can begin submitting me for bookings. hmmm...but there's Knotts which I'm almost sure I'll get...we'll see, lifes a mystery these days.
To answer Stronger's question...no I didn't get a tan, but I probably should whether I get the job or not. Brendon and I went night swimming this weekend and I thought I saw some shiny buried treasure...nope it was just my flourescent white legs underwater!
